Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 in 2025

From 14 October 2025, there will be no new updates or security fixes for either the Home or Pro versions of Windows 10.

If you’re still using Windows 10, it’s time to think about upgrading to a newer operating system.

Why Upgrade?

Using an old operating system is risky because it won’t get security updates. This makes your computer more vulnerable to viruses and hackers.

For businesses, this can lead to data breaches, lost customer trust, and serious security issues, whilst schools and other educational establishments face additional risks, including serious breaches to safeguarding, GDPR and OFSTED requirements.

What happens if I don’t upgrade?

If you decide not to upgrade to Windows 11 before October 14, 2025, your Windows 10 PC will still work, but it will become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.

Leaving a Windows 10 computer unpatched after October 2025 will likely open it up to the first critical vulnerability within the first month, and to more and more in the following months.

My computer is not compatible with Windows 11, but I’ve been told it will be fine with Windows 11?

Windows 10 will prompt users to upgrade to Windows 11. Part of this Microsoft process includes checking your device for compatibility with Windows 11.

Devices that are not compatible, should not be upgraded as security updates will not necessarily work, and whilst it may not happen immediately, there will likely come a point when an update causes an irreversible ‘Blue Screen of Death’, causing serious down time and potential data loss.

We all know too well how much damage a single update can cause, just like the recent CrowdStrike IT outage where one update affected 8.5 million devices.

Non-compatible hardware upgraded to Windows 11 is also likely to render certain software applications unusable or invalidate the software manufacturers support agreement.

This includes business critical applications such as accountancy and email applications – Imagine the impact and cost to your organisation of losing all of your accountancy data, or the loss of all of your emails.

How do I upgrade?

As Windows 10 will soon become unsupported by Microsoft, it is essential for all organisations, but importantly those organisations that use Windows 10 to upgrade to Windows 11.
